WATER CONSERVATION SUMMIT
2006 Summit & White Paper
In 2005, the AB 2717 Task Force identified landscape irrigation as the single largest use of water in California's urban areas, and adopted 43 recommendations to improve water use efficiency. AB1881, passed September 28, 2006, turned four of the recommendations into law. Both bills allow local jurisdictions to customize the recommendations to respond most effectively to local climate, demographic and economic factors. The goal of the 2006 Summit was to develop a customized plan for San Diego County.
On September 29, 2006, the first annual Water Conservation Summit brought San Diego County water agencies together with land-use planning agencies and the businesses that design,
build, supply, maintain and sell urban landscapes. The desired outcome of the symposium was to increase market supply and demand for water-efficient landscaping in San Diego County.
The Summit's three panel discussions were designed to provide each Summit participant with the understanding and perspective to actively develop strategies and action plans during the
afternoon break-out sessions. Participants were expected to come prepared, ready to contribute their expertise and ideas -- and they did. Their recommendations, presented in the 2006 White Paper, launched three public/private working groups and formed the basis of the San Diego County Water Authority's Blueprint for Water Conservation.
